ABOUT US
RMI is a multidisciplinary consulting firm working with rural communities in Africa preparing them for commercial farming.
RMI is a group of three companies located respectively in Mauritius, Eswatini and South Africa
We bring knowledge of modern farming, business management and organization, the knowledge that farmers need to own and operate sustainable businesses in agriculture. We have extensive experience in agriculture development throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, and in particular in working with outgrowers.
The RMI team has its roots in the Komati Downstream Development (PDA) Project in Swaziland. RMI Directors were instrumental in the design and establishment of this project from the year 2000 to 2005. This resulted in the radical transformation of the socio-economic landscape whereby mostly impoverished small scale dry land subsistence farmers became co-owners and operators of large scale commercial irrigated farms covering a total area 6000ha. (Learn more about the PDA project).
RMI as company started off with the EcoEnergy project in Tanzania, but has since grown to a number of projects throughout Africa and beyond. We have worked with over 10,000 rural households training people so they can commercially farm coffee, tea, rice, sugarcane, wheat, soybeans and maize seed and bean seed.
RMI also helps foreign investors to engage fruitfully with the communities surrounding their estates, obtaining the social license to operate and working together in new Value Chains.
RMI has successfully undertaken more than 30 projects, in Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Eswatini, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Learn more about our projects.
RMI aims to build influence in the development industry in Africa around ideas of empowerment instead of entitlement, people-centred instead of process-centred, and business opportunities instead of hand-outs.

"We expected a hand-out. But instead, RMI brought knowledge and ideas about business. Now we don't need any hand-outs. We make our own money. We have our own company farming sugar-cane and we have shares in a transport company."
